Alpha, the story of how wolf became mans best friend. Set in Europe 20,000 years ago, a boy named Keda has a lot to prove to his tribe. Especially to his father and Chief of the tribe Tau who pushes his boy to be better. Better at hunting and being a man like him. But if the kid has one thing going for him, it’s his ability to make quality arrow heads. It’s the one reason why Tau gave him a pass to hunt buffalo with him and the other tribesmen.
But after an unfortunate encounter with a buffalo in the hunt, Keda goes over the mountains edge and is thought to be dead. Yet Keda will not die so easily, for he is the main character, and you have to wait at least two more films to kill him off. This isn’t Game of Thrones after all. Anyway, back to the review, Keda is met with another near death experience when he encounters a pack of wolves. While halfway up a tree, he stabs one of them trying to get him with his knife in self-defense.
He nurses the grey wolf back to health in his cozy cave and names him Alpha. The wolf knows that Keda won’t hurt him even though he did so previously, but out of survival and not malice. Together, the two form a close bond. They travel, hunt and eat together.
Being an animal lover myself, I found Alpha to be heart warming and even powerful in moments. It may start off pretty slow, but gets better when Keda meets Alpha. Together they survive out in the harsh climate with not much except a knife, bow and each other. Keda with his new friend journey to find the boys village and family that was left behind when they thought him to be dead.
The movie is completely in an ancient dialect similar to Native American, with English subtitles thankfully. I nevertheless enjoyed this film. Although not the beginning as much, but the story that unfolds thereafter is a dramatic, heart warming and positive one. So if you have ever owned a dog, babysat one for a friend or just love watching Animal Planet, you’re going to fall in love with Alpha. I did.
