Another great week for fans of anime saw a gunslinger with metal legs from Captain Levi’s past attack him in a titanless episode of Attack on Titan. Dragon Ball Super finally ended the filler by setting up for a new fighting tournament where all universes must fight, also Bulma’s totally preggers. And it turns out that Licht was not the strongest of the Eye of the Midnight Sun as the three strongest members who call themselves the Third Eye come to his aid to do battle with Captain Yami, Asta and the others on Black Clover. This weeks choice for my Anime Episode of the Week was a most difficult one indeed, but the one that stood out the most in my mind was those crazy hero kids from My Hero Academia.
In Episode 16: In Their Own Quirky Ways, the student heroes of U.A ripped and clawed their way through a harrowing obstacle course. Races are always fun, especially ones where would be heroes must dodge giant robots and cross a mine field in order to win. Todoroki aka the half-hot half-cold hero took an early lead as he froze the giant robots while they were off-balance on purpose. By doing this created even more of an obstacle for the others to contend with.
As Bakugo rocketed his way up and over them like a pole vaulter in the Olympics, others soon followed. Midoriya not wanting to use All for One in this early stage used a piece of armor he ripped off from one of the bots as a means of defense. The next obstacle was a tight rope in which Midoriya and the other challengers passed easily enough. As he raced over the next obstacle which was a mine field with mines that couldn’t kill but would pack enough of a punch to make challengers wet themselves according to the lively announcer, Midoriya used his head again. Everyone was tip toeing across to avoid the mines, all expect for Bakugo who caught up to Todoroki at full speed while yelling “bastard, your declaration of war was to the wrong person.”
As Bakugo attacked the fire/ice hero, Midoriya was poised to take the lead. He used his bot armor shield to dig some mines and putting his shield under him he jumped on the grenade so to speak and went flying forward. He landed both feet on the two front-runners who seized with their fight as soon as they saw Midoriya coming. His shield hit the ground with force, setting off many land mines that propelled him to the front. The last lest leg was a foot race which Midoriya at full sprint yet still not using his borrowed All for One quirk ran until he reached the finish line, which was an arena full of fans.
Earlier All Might thought to himself about young Midoriya that he didn’t have to finish first, just qualify for the next challenge. But when his apprentice finished in 1st place he couldn’t contain his excitment. The announcer who was talking to the teacher of Class 1A Mr. Izawa aka Eraser Head saying that most of his class finished in the top spots and that he must be a good teacher. Izawa in his bland delivery said I had nothing to do with their success or something similar.
Finishing first in the first challenge and proudly announcing that to the world that Izuku Midoriya was in fact here now leaves a big target on his back. The episodes end set up for the next challenge in which teams of 2-4 must work together. Teams are determined in order of how they finished in the obstacle course so that means that the bottom three could defeat the top three and earn a lot of not only points but bragging rights if they should defeat them in an arena battle. I can’t wait to see how this team aspect will play out next week with Midoriya working together with his rival Bakugo. My guess is that Bakugo will lose his cool and try to kill Midoriya. Saw that one coming a mile away.
