This week in anime, Deku got some help from past All for One users on My Hero Academia. Goku wins his exhibition match, but gets an unexpected challenge from someone who brands him a villain on Dragon Ball Super. And the Black Bulls hit the beach for some much-needed R & R followed by a mission on Black Clover. My anime episode of the week goes to the new kid on the block…Boruto from the new series Baruto: Naruto Next Generations.
In the pilot episode entitled Boruto Uzumaki, the son of the 7th Hokage has arrived. That’s right, this show is a follow-up to Naruto: Shippuden which hasn’t yet finished it’s run on Adult Swim. Considering that the series was 500 episodes and their only on 220 something, it will take a very long time for the series that ended officially in 2017 to end its run on Adult Swim. Although not being one of the people who has seen every episode of Shippuden yet, I was still pleasantly surprised to see the new Naruto series in full swing.
The season 1, episode 1 show starts off with Boruto fighting an enemy who says “the age of the shinobi is over.” This is a flash forward scene that quickly dissolves as the show goes back years earlier. Boruto Uzumaki, the son of Naruto and his friend Shikadai Nara, son of Shikamaru do what ninjas do best…leap from building to building in a friendly parkour race through the Hidden Leaf Village. But the village is more city like than it once was, and the duo has many obstacles in their way, mainly the lot of people at every corner.
Boruto soon comes across a kid his age who is being bullied in an alley. He burst onto the scene a lot like his famous father and shoves the green chillie burger he was eating right in the mouth of one of the bullies. Bon appetite bro. He summons some shadow clones and makes quick work of the three boys who run off. He checks on the bullied boy’s condition and learned that his name is Denki, son a wealthy business man in town.
Boruto makes a new friend in Denki who is quite timid and only does what his father tells him. Which in this case is to enter the Ninja Academy and learn Nin-Jutsu so that he may be strong enough to run the family business someday. They part ways and both go home to their families. Boruto arrives to greet his baby sister Himawari who looks much like their mother Hinata Hyuuga. Who is a bit upset that her son was late getting home.
Not as upset or rather annoyed as Boruto was that his dad Naruto was working late again that night. Since fulfilling his dream of becoming Hokage, Naruto has been a busy man and is often not home to see his family. Boruto has become used to this but nevertheless holds a grudge against father.
Denki arrives home to hear his father lecture him before leaving the room. Then suddenly, from a corner of the mansion a purple snake jumps out and bites him before merging with the boy’s body. This fills Denki’s mind with dark thoughts of revenge. So he goes to the train station the next morning, which is also the very morning that he along with Boruto and many others begin Ninja Academy. He sets a trap for the boys who bullied him the day before, locking them in a hazardous train car with no means of escape.
To make matters worse, there is another train car coming straight for them. Fortunately, Boruto arrives and with his strange eye which can see Denki’s chakra notices the purple energy emitting from him. He reasons with Denki, telling him that he doesn’t have to follow the path that his father has planned for him. Denki listens to his friend as Boruto with little time before the train cars collide summons some shadow clones in order to reach the train switch quickly.
Denki snapping back into reality helps hold Boruto so he doesn’t go flying out of the window. Finally in range, Boruto hits the switch which stops the train. The boy bullies are grateful and won’t be messing with Denki anymore. With all this excitement, Boruto and Denki are going to be late for there first day of Ninja Academy if they don’t jet.
Boruto pulls a lever that causes the train car he and Denki were on to derail. They crash right into the 7th Hokage’s face in the Mount Rushmore of Hokages. “Boruto Uzumaki is here ya know” says the boy right in front of his father the Hokage and every student in the class. A now older Konohamaru comes to teach some respect to the Hokage’s boy who shows him none by punching and kicking him only to have every blow blocked.
“Call me sensei” says Konohamaru.
“No, I won’t call you sensei” says Boruto.
Naruto can only smile of how much Boruto reminds him of himself. At the end of the episode Boruto says the line that defines the whole show. “Whatever path I choose, won’t have anything to do with my father. Because this…is my story.”
This ends the first episode and with it begins a new era. And so far, I like the character of Boruto despite being voiced by a female voice actor which is weird. Although Naruto’s voice at the beginning series was whinny and annoying, just saying. I am looking forward to delving into this new series, while at the same time catching up on all 500 episodes of Naruto Shippuden by the end of this decade hopefully.
