Anime Episode of the Week #16

Updated: May 18, 2020

This week in anime saw Goku and Gohan looking for recruits to aid them in the upcoming Tournament of Power on Dragon Ball Super. Uraraka may have lost the battle against Bakuko, but still had the love and support of her parents on My Hero Academia. And the Scouts may have found a way to plug a hole in Wall Maria thanks to Eren on Attack on Titan. So my pick for anime episode of the week this time goes to the ninjas of Boruto: Nartuo Next Generations.

In Episode 3: Metal Lee Goes Wild, the obvious son of Rock Lee does just as the episode title states. As the class was being assessed at their shuriken throwing ability, it’s Metal’s turn to show his skills. His first attempt hits the target, but when he realizes that his classmates are all watching him, he gets nervous. So nervous that his throw is weak and falls to the ground well short of the target.

Now comes Boruto, armed with two huge blades that he steals from Iwabee. He aims and throws them, oblivious to the fact that Metal is still standing there frozen in embarrassment. But thanks to some quick reflexes, yet also noticing that everyone is looking at him again, Metal leap hurricane kicks the blades away, but at some school property. Then comes detention for everyone involved and not directly involved, bummer.

The punishment? Repairing the broken Hokage statue that Boruto crashed a train through back in the pilot episode. Using only a chisel, Boruto, Metal, Shikadai and others worked, but not very hard on mending the statue. During breaks, they all would play a handheld game that I swore looked like Pokémon, or maybe Final Fantasy. Anyway, as they got back to the grind, Metal eager to impress chisels at a super human level and ends up breaking the statue. Sending huge chunks of rock to go spitting everywhere.

Oops, well at least the day was over and they all could go home. Boruto invites everyone to go eat some burgers, but not everyone would go after some harsh things that Shikadai says about Metal. To sum it up his criticism towards Metal, Shikadai says that he works too hard to impress people with his skills and that he should stop wasting his time doing this. Metal was hurt by this and parted ways with the others. Going to his parents, Shikadai who told them all what happened at school.

His father Shikamaru was even keeled and offered him some helpful advice and that what he said to Metal isn’t worth feeling bad about. His mother on the other hand is one tough cookie who basically says to be a man and suck it up. Taking all of this in, Shikadai knew what he had to do, apologize to Metal at school the next day.

So as Shikadai finds Metal the next morning, Metal attacks. His kicks and punches explode with fury and hatred. Boruto on the scene notices with his strange eye that I believe has something to do his mother’s passed down Byakugun ability senses a familiar chakra surrounding Metal Lee. The same dark energy as he saw in Denki from episode 1 was ever-present now in Metal.

Boruto and Shikadai team up to fight Metal, but are overwhelmed by his intense Tai-Jutsu techniques which are just the same as his father Rock Lee’s style. They had to use trickery to beat Metal. So Shikadai used his shadow possession Jutsu to try to trap him, but Metal realized that it couldn’t reach him if he was at a distance. He fought off Boruto and Shikadai both until the boys plan was at once revealed.

As Shikadai was revealed to actually be Boruto using a transformation Jutsu to mimic his appearance and fighting style. Then the real Shikadai who was transformed into Boruto ensnared Metal using his shadow possession Jutsu. Metal using incredible strength broke out of it, but tripped over his feet and fell to the ground like a total dork, or like me.

The ending moments of the episode were Shikadai apologizing to Metal for the hurtful and blunt things he said. Metal accepted this but not before being rather blunt to Shikadai just to even the score. And this concludes another episode of Boruto, a show that I can see getting better over time. And will be excited to see more new and returning favorites from the Naruto anime universe soon.
