This week in anime, we learned the back story on Kenny and Levi on Attack on Titan. Goku spars with the new slimed down version of Majin Buu on Dragon Ball Super. And Josuke and Okuyasu eat at a quint little Italian eatery, as they soon discover that the chef is a stand user on Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable. My pick for anime episode of the week goes to a new comer armed with psychic abilities, it’s Mob Psycho 100.
In the pilot episode called “Self-Proclaimed Psychic: Reigen Arataka~ and Mob~, Shigeo Kageyama is Mob. A psychic with the ability to see ghosts and the power to exercise them. He is a middle school student by day, and not a very good one at that. He is shy, not the brightest and doesn’t show any interest or emotion in anything. Except for this one popular girl who he said to himself “looked extra cute today”.
When he is not embarrassing himself in school, he works with Reigen Arataka to track down some evil spirits. In this, their first episode working together, they go investigate some suspicious behavior in a railroad tunnel. When the two encounter the presence of a fallen motorcycle gang, it’s quickly apparent that Reigen is a fake and Mob has to do all the work exercising them.
Of course, Reigen acts as though he is a very powerful Psychic and has Mob fooled. So while Mob takes care of some evil biker spirits, Reigen encounters a big statue of what he thinks is a wrestler. But actually it’s the gang leader whose using the statue as a host body. As the wrestler is about blast him with dark energy, Mob lends some assistance by summoning a psychic barrier to protect Reigen.
He then goes and turns the wrestler into a tiny little evil spirit that couldn’t kill a fly. He uses the little biker gang leader spirit to help him locate a powerful evil presence that Mob sensed further in the tunnel. He goes and get himself swallowed by the large mouthed evil spirit. But he is not dead yet as he unleashed his awesome psychic powers and blows up the evil creature with no harm done to him.
He then finds an old photo of the biker leader and his gang and hands it to the leader. The spirits of the gang said that they supposedly died from slipping on a banana peel which is an obvious Mario Kart reference. With their spirits at rest, the gang can finally ascend to the after life. By the episodes end, Mob asks Reigen why he didn’t do anything to help. Reigen responds by saying “I told you at the start that I don’t deal with small fries.”
I wonder how long Reigen can keep this whole fake psychic thing up. Although in the TV series Psych, the dude in that was a fake psychic too and had everyone fooled so anything is possible. Especially in the world of anime where nothing is normal. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Mob Psycho 100 turned out to be a fresh new anime that I’m excited to see more of in the coming weeks. Especially that countdown to Mobs explosion at the end. Can’t wait to see him go 100.
“I’m Corey, and this is my story so far.”
