Anime Episode of the Week #3

Updated: May 18, 2020

Another slew of interesting anime eps this week. From a super saiyan blue baseball game to a look back of previous shows from the season thus far, (I just hate it when TV shows do the whole catching up on episodes thing) and even the end of the latest FLCL season. But nothing held my interest and made laugh more than episode 2 of the unbearably ridiculous new show Pop Team Epic entitled “Vanver-A game in another dimension”.

The girls are at it again as the opening scene has Popuko and Pipimi enter into some half-drawn role-playing game world where they are the only ones fully drawn in and colored. Pipimi quickly jokes about their show saying that “it’s like they put all their resources into episode 1 and then just gave up.” For those who haven’t seen Pop Team Epic yet, just know that this a mature comedic anime that is intended for adults who have a warped sense of humor. Like me.

When the show first aired I thought that it was the perfect fit for adult swim. Although I think putting it on Toonami was a mistake. Made in Japan or not, these girls belong on the Sunday night lineup somewhere in between Family Guy and Ballmastarz 9009. And by the way, is it just me or does this show remind anyone else of Robot Chicken?

The new opening theme song is as catchy and weird as the show itself. The dude in the sunshades totally creeps me out. One of the funniest parts has to be when the girls are eating at a restaurant and Pipimi pulls out her phone, points it at her plate of food and says “I gonna Instagram that.” Which is something I haven’t done with my food yet despite how delicious that chicken alfredo may have looked.

Their was more Bob epic team this show, and it may not have been as funny as the girls, but it moved the episode along. I must say that having a fifteen minute show run twice in succession but with male voice actors for the girls instead of females will run its course soon enough. They really need to run full 23 minute episodes of Pop Team Epic on adult swim soon or prepared to face the hate mail from fans. I guess people don’t have to watch the second run of the show, but really what else is on to watch on a Saturday night.

One of my favorite parts was when Popuko started singing little bunny fuufu walking through the forest and then some girl starts singing along too. This angers the fiery short blonde as she chasing the other girl away and screaming “don’t sing over me bitch.” But perhaps the best part of the whole show was the epic pop song that the girls sing together. the song is called “love me” and should be downloaded onto a mobile device immediately, seriously. “Now time to show you my pop technique.”

If anything, Pop Team Epic will continue to deliver the off the wall foul-mouthed behavior that fans of the show love next week and thereafter. “Are you upset?” “No, I’m not upset”.
