“It’s been awhile since we had one of these talks.” Those are the first words spoken in Season 9 Episode 2: The Bridge. Rick speaks to Negan about the progress being made in the new world that Carl envisioned. This episode saw the people of the Saviors and Alexandria building a bridge. Which really is just a metaphor for building a bridge of friendship between the two former enemies.
But relations are already starting to break down when one of the Saviors Justin, the dude with the long hair and beard asks for some water. The boy from the Kingdom Henry who was the water boy gave the Savior a cool drink. But Justin was greedy and decided to drink all of the water from the jug. Henry tried to stop him but got shoved to the ground, but then angry stands up and knocks the Savior down with his stick.
Then all hell broke loose as Daryl and Justin get into a fight. Rick steps in to break up the brawl before an all out Alexandria vs Saviors battle royal broke out on the bridge. Daryl was genuinely pissed this episode, pissed most at Rick for letting the Saviors live and walk beside them. Rick believes that what he is doing is right, but I don’t believe that he will ever convince Daryl of that.
Anne and father Gabriel sure got chummy. Yet another unexpected coupling this season. It’s mostly Anne who initiates as she softly strokes his hand. He is hesitates, but goes along with it and later a full on teenage make out season commenced. And why not, either one of them could die tomorrow so show some love.
One of my favorites parts of the episode was when walkers came to disrupt the construction of the new bridge. Causing the Saviors and Alexandria to work together to stop them. It was awesome when Rick fired a shot at the rope that tied the stack of logs together and the logs all rolled down the hill. Not only stopping the walkers in their tracks but completely trampling them.
Back at the camp, Daryl and Justin got into it again. Daryl was going to kill the Savior until Carol stopped him. Later Justin saw Rick and said that he better keep Daryl on a leash. Rick gave him a piece of his mind saying that when he was a cop he would have to listen to dipshits like Justin run their mouth. And asked for him to leave or stitches won’t fix what he does to him. The Savior left without hesitation.
Carol and Ezekiel got unofficially engaged. Around the campfire when they thought none else was looking. Carol just wanted to try on the ring, but Ezekiel wanted to get down on one knee and do the whole proposal bit. “But I have a speech” he said.
Rick has a conversion with Negan in his cell from a top-secret blacksite facility. Or just an old wine cellar. Either way, Rick was optimistic as he explained his plans for the future. In response, Negan said an unforgettable line that just may came to pass because Rick choose to keep Negan alive. “Your not saving the world, your just getting it ready for me.”
Episode 2 of the latest season I preferred over the first one. I think that this should have been the first episode. Or at least they should have put the whole Rick and Negan conversation in the first one then I and many other fans would be satisfied. Next week, I foresee the relations between the Saviors and Alexandria to crumble right before our very eyes. Not that it’s a big surprise or anything.
