After much criticism, Captain Marvel has finally landed; poised to crush the box office with a photon blast. Brie Larson stars as the Earthling Carol Danvers who after crashing her jet discovers a glowing alien looking pod that she fires upon with her Air Force issued gun. After the pod explodes, she is suddenly plucked from her home and brought to another world by the Kree, a race of well-trained galactic warriors. Seeing that after the explosion, she absorbed the energy from the alien pod, the Kree decided to train her and make her a weapon like them. One man named Yon-Rogg trains the newly named Vers as a soldier in the war against the shapeshifting Skrulls.
I like how this movie is set in a time where dial-up internet and grunge reign supreme, that’s right…the 90’s. 1995 to be exact, and the soundtrack from Nirvana to No Doubt lends itself well to the films feel, I think.
The action here is pretty good, not Avengers worthy though, but still fun to watch Vers blast foes with her photon-powered hands. The scenes with Nick Fury and the cat named Goose are cute and break up any moments that are too serious.
Unfortunately, that is about it for the good in Captain Marvel, time for the bad. Brie Larson may an Academy Award winning actress, but her performance in this film is average at best. I got bored in the one scene where she and her Air Force BFF were sitting down chatting about their past and what not. It was meant to be a serious scene after Carol had returned to Earth, but still, I quickly lost interest at not only this, but most of the plain dialogue in this movie. The action as I mentioned was only pretty good, and not at the caliber of other Marvel films.
Overall, I’d say that if you really want something to wet your whistle before the Avengers: Endgame hits, then by all means go see this. The Stan Lee Marvel opening at the beginning as well as his final cameo were a nice touch. But mainly, go see this movie for the Endgame teaser at the end, pretty awesome. Captain Marvel may not be the worst Marvel movie, it’s just nowhere near as good as Thor: Ragnarök or any of the Avengers movies. And if I wasn’t a Marvel fan, my score would be lower for sure.
