Dragon Ball Super: Broly Movie Review!

Updated: May 18, 2020

Power up, because the newest and perhaps greatest Dragon Ball movie has been unleashed. Dragon Ball Super: Broly is a retelling of the legendary Super Saiyan’s origin story, but that doesn’t mean that Broly isn’t any less of a bad ass. His father Paragus still has a shock collar around his sons’ neck and controller in hand for fear of him going all Hulk on everyone. The film fills certain gaps in the original story, like where Napa, Vegeta and Raditz were when Frieza destroyed planet Vegeta.

Frieza himself has been given a different look while in his base form that is more like the manga and less like the anime. Not sure if I dig the new look personally, too much pink. I also didn’t care for the new voice actor for Freiza in the English dub of the movie. Makes him sound like Vizzini from the Princess Bride. Inconceivable!

Aside from that minor gripe, I love everything else about Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Like how they showed both of Goku’s parents, his dad Bardock and his mom Gine, who is the more compassionate of the two parents of earths greatest hero. Sensing their home worlds destruction, Bardock sends little Kakarot away in a space pod while he fights and dyes by Frieza’s planet destroying finger.

Onto Broly’s story. It tells him as a child born with an abnormally high power that is even greater than the Saiyan King’s son Prince Vegeta. The King is threatened by Broly’s power and tries to have him killed. But Broly’s father Paragus gets wind of this and takes his son to the planet Vampa where for years, he trains him hoping to better control his power.

Fast forward years later after the Tournament of Power on planet Earth where Frieza returns and wants the Dragon Balls to make his wish. The wish is something unexpected of the tyrant and I won’t spoil it here, but I all I can say is that it’s a doozy. So then, Frieza, Broly and Paragus all land on Earth, again I won’t spoil why, but you can probably venture a guess.

It’s time for Goku and Vegeta to meet Broly. And by meet, I mean fight a truly epic battle that lasts nearly half the film, a good thing. And yes, Goku and Vegeta do the fusion dance and become Gogeta after fighting him individually and Broly getting stronger and more capable with each attack, he soon overwhelmed the Saiyan duo.

Some of my favorite moments are the more comical ones. Like when Broly is fighting Goku and Vegeta and runs into Frieza. Which doesn’t slow down Broly at all as he starts beating on Frieza without a second thought. I also liked when Broly was fighting Goku and he lifted him up and start smashing him onto the ground many times reminiscent of the first Avenger’s movie. The scene where the Hulk did that exact thing to Loki after he was bragging that he was a God. This and other Easter eggs are frequent in the film.

In a nutshell, I really enjoyed Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and would go see it again. The story was well told, and the action and animation of the movie were at a whole new level than previously seen in Dragon Ball filmdom. The scream that Sean Schemmel as Goku gave when Broly had him in his grip nearly broke the sound barrier. The film had funny moments as well as ass kicking, and emotional ones and I loved every second of it. Now if you would excuse me, I’m going to spike my hair up and practice my best Broly yell. Sayonara!
