If ‘300″esq action scenes, magic and hot women in tight red leather are your thing, then Legend of the Seeker is definitely worth your while. Taking place in a fantasy world, the show has five main characters. First is Richard Cypher, a young forest dweller who discovers that he is a hero of prophecy called a Seeker of Truth. He meets a woman clad in all white named Kahlan Ammell.
She is something known as a confessor. With her hand upon another’s throat, Kahlan confesses them. It’s like a love spell that causes anyone touched by her to do whatever she asks. Sort of like a love slave, but Kahlan usually uses her power as a last resort when she or the Seeker is being attacked. Also to turn bad people on the right path.
Then there is the old man Zed. He is a wizard of the first order who names Richard as Seeker of Truth and guides him on his journey. A journey to defeat an evil tyrant named Darken Rahl. In season 1, it was a rat race to retrieve the all-powerful magic instrument that is the box of Ordin. Which was split in three pieces. Commanding the Dragon Core armies, Raul seeks out the boxes of Ordin so they he may use them to rule all of the Midlands, Westlands along with D’hara which he already rules. But of course, the Seeker, the Confessor and the Wizard attempt to stop him.
This was the plot for season 1 which was 22 episodes. The whole series only lasts 2 seasons, just 44 episodes in total. This show was a victim of constantly being preempted because of baseball and airing on Saturdays in the late afternoon. Not a good time slot. So naturally people missed or couldn’t find the show leading to the great travesty of 2010 by way of cancellation of the Legend of the Seeker TV series.
The end of season 1 introduced the fifth main character leading into season 2 of the series named Cara. One of Darken Raul’s Mord-Sith who jumped ship and joined Richard and his friends on their journey. Mord-Sith’s are basically sexy assassins who whose weapon of choice is an Agile. It drains the life out of anyone who it touches, including the user. Kinda like a berserker type weapon in a Role Playing Game (RPG). in the Mord-Sith’s case however, they been trained to withstand great amounts of pain, so they really don’t even notice the life being sucked out of them.
In season 2, many rifts have opened in the ground, letting demons from the underworld into the world of the living. Creatures like Banlings. Disguised as normal humans, Banlings are the result of selling your soul to the devil, or in the series making a deal with the Keeper aka the ruler of the underworld for a second life. The drawback is that you need to kill at least once every day just to survive or you will die again and be the Keeper’s prisoner in hell for all eternity. Don’t think I would take that deal, but Kahlan Ammell can confess me anytime.
Richard and his protectors 3 need to find the only magical item that can seal the rifts for good, the Stone of Tears. As you could expect, it wasn’t an easy journey, that would be just lame. The show combines high quality action scenes, some funny dialogue and plenty of romance between Richard and Kahlan. Even though the Confessor tells the Seeker that they can never be together because of her power would make him her slave, many situations in the series throw them together. Like the episode where Kahlan was split into two Kahlan’s, one side the cold and justice enforcer, and the other side the caring, sensitive girl who loves Richard Cypher.
In conclusion Legend of the Seeker which is based on the book series “Sword of Truth” by Terry Goodkind could have gone on many more season if it’s was on primetime. But I will nevertheless enjoy the 2 seasons it was on. The chemistry between Kahlan and Richard, the wise words and never-ending array of spells from Zed, to the trying to fit in and be more normal like drama of Cara, this show sure had great characters and episodes. And I will cherish them all. “Then I, first wizard, Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander shall name you.”
