In a kingdom where magic is banned, one young wizard must hide his true power or face the noose. A power so great, that he has no choose but to use his gift/curse to save Camelot and the world. His name…Merlin. One who was never taught to use magic, but one who was born with it.
Running 5 seasons and 65 episodes, Merlin is a British TV series based on the legends and relationship of Arthur and Merlin. I loved the show for its action, light-hearted humor and yes for its magic. How Arthur and Merlin would fight and disagree on almost everything but ultimately come to an understanding in the end.
The main villain is Morgana, who is later revealed to be the daughter of King Uther. She also has magic that she keeps under wraps knowing that her father the King would never accept her if he knew her secret. She eventually sets a plan in motion to seize the throne, but the only standing in her way is Merlin Who becomes her sworn enemy throughout the course of the series.
John Hurt voices the Great Dragon. The last of his kind after Uther destroyed his kin and makes an example of him by imprisoning him in a cave. He forges Excalibur meant for Arthur to rule England, but in return often asks favors and ultimately wants out of his chains and free to roam the world once more. Merlin is skeptical of the Great Dragon’s motives and is resistant on setting him free.
Guinevere is Morgana’s servant before Morgana’s rebellion. She rises to marry Arthur and becomes the Queen of Camelot. She defies the odds, mainly Uther in doing so and becomes popular with the people for her kind and fair nature. Being once a commoner herself, she can identify with them better than most.
Gaius, the court physician as well as Merlin’s guardian and mentor. A former sorcerer, but has long since abandoned the practice and instead helps the ill and Merlin on his quest. At first, he was the only one who knew about Merlin possessing magic, but later Morgana figured it out. Arthur was the last one to know.
This series was ever so entertaining every single week that I watched it. How Merlin would use his magic undetected to help Arthur and Arthur always thinking that something wasn’t quite right. But then brushed it off believing he was just lucky. Every time I think of the Merlin series, I miss it and wish it was still on. But alas, I must be content with watching reruns on Netflix.
This show is for everyone who enjoys a good fantasy story. Magic, knights, dragons, and the like, it’s all here. “I never learned magic, I was born with it.”-Merlin-
“I’m Corey, and this my story so far.”
