Star Trek the Original series stars William Shatner as James. T Kirk, the often emotional and lover of the hot alien ladies Captain of the Starship Enterprise. Lenard Nimoy as Spock, the highly intelligent and logical half-human half-Vulcan from the planet Vulcan who every once in a while lets his human side out in the way of emotion. And then there is DeForest Kelly as the stubborn and smart Dr. Lenard McCoy, of whom the Captain always refered to as Bones. Other characters include Scotty, Mr. Sulu, Lt. Uhura and Chekov.
I like when Kirk and Spock would often argue over the best course of action. Whether to attack or not attack that Romulan vessel ect. Spock always offering the most logical option, and the Captain always going against the Vulcan’s recommendation and instead going with his gut. McCoy would be a go between although more often than not he would side with Captain Kirk.
In addition to the drama on the Enterprise, there are the numerous exploration missions to various planets and uncharted territories. One of my all time favorite episodes has to be Space Seed. Where Ricardo Montaban’s portrayal of Khan, the super human from the 20th century is still the greatest. They find his vessel floating out in space and bring him in for questioning.
They awake Khan from his sleeping machine which suspends him in time. After awaking him, he quickly meets his biggest admirer, Lt. McGuires who is a bit of a 20th century history buff. Khan notices her love for him and sees this as an opportunity to manipulate her so that he can take over the ship and beyond. The fight that ensues between Kirk and Khan may be laughable by todays standards, but was pretty top-notch for its time.
Made in the 60’s, and it shows. Star Trek had many special guests, actors, musicians and plenty of groovy hijinks. The one episode where travelers were picked up by the Enterprise would sing songs, play instruments and were not lacking in body paint was definitely a hippie inspired group who were attempting to find the location of a paradise like planet to dwell. There were also cast members who song in other episodes. Not great, but still better than Justin Bieber.
From cool gadgets, to exploring new worlds, conflicts between other alien beings such as Klingons and Romulans, and even some romantic and light hearted moments, Star Trek had everything. The original show would spawn many other series and films thereafter. And also many imitators. But in the history of Sci-Fi TV shows, Star Trek still does it better than any other even after 50 years. Live long and prosper, so that you can watch more Star Trek.
