Jenifer Garner is back in the Taken like revenge story that is Peppermint. She stars as Riley North, married wife and mother who is struggling to makes ends meet. On the verge of losing the house, her husband Chris considers his friends offer to steal from a drug dealer in order to keep their home. But he doesn’t want to risk it, and ends up declining the offer.
Finding out that he was going to be robbed, a ruthless gang leader named Diego Garcia puts a hit out on Chris and his family. When at a carnival for their daughter Carly’s birthday, Garcia’s men gun down Chris and Carly in a drive by shooting as the family was about to leave. Riley was farther away and saw the horrific event transpire and even took a few bullets herself but survived. Now as you probably can guess, she’s pissed and vows to avenge her family.
Jenifer Garner plays the role of a mother with nothing to lose well. Hard to belive that it’s been 12 years since the end of Alias where she played the ass kicking CIA heroin. Now in Peppermint, she proves that she still has what it takes as the female John Wick essentially. As she watched her killers walk while in court, because the judge thought she was crazy planted the seed for her revenge story.
The five years that followed her families murder, she trained herself to fight, competing in MMA style matches and also learned how to use firearms. She was homeless, living on the streets and protecting the ones there from harm. On the five-year anniversary of her husband and daughters murder, she would hunt down and kill everyone in Garcia’s gang until she finally came face to face with Garcia himself.
I like how an ordinary person who has lost everything and is not CIA or in the military acquires the skills to fight and survive all on her own through sheer will. And the fact that she is a woman makes this different yet still familiar to fans of the you killed my family and now I will have my revenge action genre which I totally made up just now. Anyway, to fans of such films as Taken, John Wick, and Atomic Blonde, go see this movie.
It’s arguably not as good as those movies, but still worth watching to see J-Gar like you have never seen her before.
