It’s been 7 long years since the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo hit theaters. And now finally a sequel. Well…maybe not quite a sequel, more like a reboot. In the Girl in the Spiders Web, Lisbeth Salander returns along with her former lover, journalist for Millenium Mikael Blomkvist. Together, they work to stop Lisbeth’s sister Camilla who has learned much from their father in the methods of violence and chaos as she now leads a criminal group called the Spiders. Camillia seeks revenge on her sister for leaving home via jumping off the back porch into a snow patch and never returning.
Camilla spent years alone with her abusive father. Who carefully molded her into a ruthless, cunning killer who forever hates Lisbeth for abandoning her. This along with the first Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie are based off of the Millennium book series by Stieg Larson. But the Girl in the Spiders Web is not based off of the second book called the Girl Who Played With Fire, it’s actually based on the fourth book of the same name as this recent film. Being a fan of the book series, I was appalled that they decided to skip the second book movie adaptation. And also, that Ronney Mara didn’t reprise her role as the kick ass cyber punk hacker chick with social issues.
Instead, the new movie stars Claire Foy. A talented British actress for sure, but after watching both movies, I still prefer Rooney’s adaptation over Claire’s. Although it’s important to keep in mind that the first movie adaptations of the series were already made in Sweden where these books are based in before Claire and Rooney ever took on the role. With that all said, I like how Claire played the character of Lisbeth Salander. It shows the difference between how she was in the first book and how she evolved as a person.
In the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, she was very anti-social, in the Girl in the Spiders Web, she is still not very chatty, but has become more confident in herself. She still is Leary around men, after she had been raped and hurt by men in the past. Mikael however was the only man she ever really trusted. And in the latest film, they find each other again. He is still sleeping with his co-worker who Lisbeth thinks is his girlfriend, but is actually married to another man. Mikael’s and his friends relationship is purely based on casual sex and nothing more.
So Lisbeth comes to terms with this and focuses on finding the child of a tech billionaire who develops a piece of technology that has the NSA, Swedish intelligence and even her dear sister Camilla interested in. The boy named August holds the key to unlocking the code that unleashes the devastation of a program called Firefall. When unlocked, the user can access the world nuclear launch codes.
I liked the fact that we got to see Lisbeth do some fighting in this movie. Although small in stature, she fights smart and handles her self well. Oh and she also uses a gun. She fights her sister’s henchman mostly in this film and later has some help.
I would say overall that although I loved the Rooney Mara portrayal better, I really ended up liking the Girl in the Spiders Web. It was intense, good characters and story and has Lisbeth Salander. What more could a guy ask for. Maybe more nude scenes like in the Rooney Mara version, but perhaps that’s a little too much to ask for.
