the Walking Dead Season 9 Trailer Breakdown!

Updated: May 18, 2020

The zombies are coming, the zombies are coming. it’s nearly that time of year again. Where more and more leaves start to fall and a new season of the Walking Dead is just over the Hilltop.(see what I did there) But seriously now, there is a lot to discuss after watching the new trailer, and I will do my best to try and cover everything that happened and predict what could happen come October.

First off, Rick looks as old as dirt. Growing a grey beard made him lose hair from his head. At the start of the trailer, old man Rick goes down a creepy and dark looking cellar where he proceeds to pull up a chair and catch up with an old friend…Negan. “It’s been a while since we had one of these talks” he says.

He goes on to say “that it wasn’t that long ago when we had to fight just to stay alive. But it’s not like that anymore”. And were building, growing, yada, yada, yada. Then it shows Rick on horseback, but he’s not alone, well other than the horse I mean. He is carrying Negan’s precious barbed wire baseball bat Lucille as he bashes a Walkers head in with it.

And it shows Rick helping out the Saviors, giving them what they need to get back on there feet. “Bless you Rick Grimes. Now give us guns so we can kill you all”. That last quite was not an actual quite, only the first sentence, but I’m sure that’s what some of the Saviors were thinking.

“That’s a real pretty picture you paint Rick. When do I get to see it” says Negan to Rick. Not sounding very convinced in the least that making peace with the Saviors is going to work after the war that both communities have waged against each other. But as they say, yesterdays enemies are tomorrows allies, or vice versa.

Maggie is still frustrated with Rick from letting Negan live and also feeling betrayed for Rick going back on his word. “When we were fighting the Saviors, you told me that I would be the one following you, yet you never did, because I wasn’t someone to follow. That changes now.” she says. I predict that Maggie’s anger will boil over and she will go against Rick if she has to if it means destroying all of the Saviors once and for all.

Then there was the group of signs naming each community. The one that stuck out the most in my mind was HQ, where the heck is this headquarters supposed to be, and who lives there? Maybe HQ is a supply and ammo depot in a big city, who knows. The other communities listed are Oceanside, the Sanctuary, Toledo and Alexandria. I guess the Kingdom is still rebuilding both its walls and it’s ranks after it’s devastation from the Saviors last season, so I guess that it is deemed under construction then.

Michonne talks about setting rules for the communities to all live by. “This is how we treat each other, and this how we don’t”. So basically if everyone is kissing and sharing it’s all good, but when someone eats the last remaining pop tart in the camp, oh it’s on bitch. I like Daryl’s line as he says “that small group we had in the beginning, we could do anything. That was right. This doesn’t feel right man.”

After some scenes of the enviable fights that break out between the communities, Negan has this to say to Rick. “When it all goes to shit, and it will. Make sure you come back and tell me all about that date”. After some character reflection shots and steely gazes, it shows one of my favorite characters Eugene sporting an African safari like outfit. Seriously though, I dig the Crocodile Dundee hat and think he should wear it every show. Although it would cover up that magnificent mullet so maybe just on holidays.

After some more action oriented scenes, Walker kills and all, we see Father Gabriel talk with some newbies. “Who were you before?” he says and after each one described their pasts before Z-day, he then ask them “who are you now?” It shows each of them killing to survive just as any other would in the zombie apocalypse. The final scene was pretty cool as two characters(I think two of the new ones) run into the mud and cover themselves in it when a horde of Walkers just passes on by on their Sunday stroll for brains. This instantly reminded me of the first Predator movie when Arnold did the same thing to mask his body heat from the Predator’s thermal vision, good times.

After watching the season 9 trailer for the Walking Dead, I’m not entirely sure what to expect. Yet I’m excited to find out what HQ is, what more words of wisdom Negan has for Rick and when Georgie will make her appearance in the new season. I did see a helicopter towards the end, so I’m sure we’ll find out soon. Until October 7th, we will just have to wait, speculate and then wait some more until the season 9 premiere hits our screens like a barbed wire bat through a window.
